Nine Year Old Girl Suffers Serious Injuries in Car Accident

A 9-year-old girl was seriously injured in a two-car accident on Monday. She was listed in fair condition, on Thursday, at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California.

The girl was a passenger in a 1998 Honda being driven by a 33-year-old woman, of Magalia, that was traveling north. The woman told California Highway Patrol investigators she missed a right turn so she pulled into a two-way left turn lane, attempting to make a u-turn.

Another Magalia resident traveling south, said the woman waited until a patrol car passed her, but failed to see his 1931 Ford roadster that was traveling behind the patrol car and pulled out in front of him, allowing no time for him to stop.

The Ford struck the Honda on the passenger side. The driver suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Enloe Medical Center for treatment.

Mom Dies in SUV Crash as her Son is Learning to Drive

The mother of a teenager learning how to drive was killed in a car accident, Thursday, when their SUV crashed into a ditch.

The boy's stepfather was in the front passenger seat giving the boy driving instructions, while the mother and her baby were in the back.

All the occupants were wearing seatbelts and the infant was in a car seat at the time of the crash.

According to a California Highway Patrol Officer, the stepfather had told the teen to "turn left here," and the boy jerked the wheel causing the vehicle to plummet into a ditch. The vehicle was traveling 50 mph.

The mother was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Chico, where she was pronounced dead. The infant was injured and the stepfather suffered a fractured collarbone. The teenager had cuts to his hand but was otherwise okay.

Highway Pass Leads to Three Vehicle Collision

In a car crash, Thursday, a Honda Prelude was left facing the wrong direction on a busy highway. The accident didn't cause any injuries but the driver of another vehicle that was involved was arrested for driving under the influence.

A California Highway Patrol spokesman said the accident involved three vehicles - the Honda Prelude, Honda CRV and an International moving van.

The accident occurred at 1:30 pm when the Honda CRV was entering the onramp at Eighth Street, traveling behind the slow moving International van that was pulling a chipper.

As the truck approached the top of the ramp, the CRV had gotten tired of going so slow and shot off to the left of the truck onto the freeway cutting off the Honda Prelude in the process.

While trying to avoid being struck, the driver of the Prelude lost control of the vehicle and ran in the Van. The car came to rest in the left lane, facing oncoming traffic.

All three were wearing seatbelts and no one was injured in the crash. The crash did cause significant damage to the rear and passenger side of the Prelude and damaged the rear axle of the International van and tool box.

The driver of the Prelude will likely be listed as the driver responsible for the crash, for driving under the influence and for making an unsafe lane change.

Toddler Seriously Injured in Crash

A 2-year-old Chico boy is at UC Davis Medical Center recovering from serious injuries he sustained in a car accident on Sunday morning.

A police report says the toddler, was riding in a safety seat in the back seat of his mother's car, that was heading west on East 20th, near Bruce Road. The car veered to the left, crashing into a tree. The driver, 24, was wearing a seatbelt and suffered only minor injuries in the crash.

Witnesses and emergency personnel said the toddler was unresponsive in the backseat of the vehicle. Paramedics transported him to Enloe Medical Center in his safety seat. A pediatric trauma team worked for many hours to stabilize the toddler.

The woman was on her way to bring breakfast to her husband at work, when she looked back to check on the toddler and sneezed. The split second distraction was enough to cause her to lose control of her vehicle.

The boy is recovering slowly, but he is still unconscious. The boy suffered a fracture to one of his eye sockets, a depressed skull fracture and other head injuries that caused swelling of the brain. Doctors expect the boy to be unconscious up to seven days, until the swelling stops. On Thursday, he was listed in fair condition.

The Chico Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating due injuries the boy sustained in the accident.

Man Using Laptop while Driving Dies in Car Crash

As you might imagine, using a laptop computer in your car, while driving, probably isn't the best thing to do.

A man whom appeared to be driving while using his laptop died in a car accident when his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed with a Hummer.

CHP says they found the dead man's laptop computer plugged into the lighter of his Honda Accord and still running. The man that died in the crash was a computer tutor in Chico, California.

The couple traveling in the Hummer escaped the crash with only minor bumps and bruises while the Hummer and Honda were both totaled.

Chico Woman Hurt in Rollover

Seatbelts likely saved the life of a Chico woman after her SUV plunged off Clark Road on Monday morning.

Sheila Renee Manzella, the driver, was alone in the SUV when it rolled down a steep hillside and came to rest 150 feet below the roadway, stopped by many small trees.

Initially Manzella's injuries were assessed as severe, but she was alert and talking when rescue arrived on the scene. While she was in pain Monday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said her injuries were considered minor.

CHP Office Fischer said Manzella was traveling west on Clark at approximately 11:12am when she said she hit a rock on the road. The driver said she swerved to the left, then back to the right and proceeded to lose control of her 2003 Toyota Sequoia when it skidded past the shoulder and off the road.

Fischer said the skid marks on the road seem to confirm Manzella's account of the accident.

The tumble down the hill punched a large hole in the passenger side door and tore the front bumper from the vehicle. The SUV came to rest on the drivers side but rescuers were able to quickly get Manzella out of the wreckage.

2 Injured when Car Flips

Leonard Shapiro of Chico was on Northbound Interstate 5, south of Hooker Creek Rd. at 11:45am on Saturday, when he changed lanes and hit into the rear of a tractor trailer, according to California Highway Patrol.

He lost control of the car, entered the center median and flipped the car over.

Shapiro and passenger Deborah Shapiro, of Chico were injured. He was flown to Mercy Medical Center and she was taken by ambulance.

Hit & Run Leaves Woman Trapped in Car

Emergency crews used the jaws of life to pry a woman from her car after a hit and run accident overnight.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Norwoodand Silver Eage in N. Sacramento when a white mustang collided into another driver.

The two men in the mustang took off running on foot, leaving the woman trapped in the car.

Emergency workers at the scene cut the roof off the car and rushed her to the hospital.

Officers are still looking for the men that fled the scene, the victim is expected to survive.

Strange Car Mishap Unexplained

San Diego, California Police have a mystery to unsolve. They are busy trying to figure out how a truck ended up on top of a parked car on Tuesday.

Somehow, a tree trimming truck came to rest on top of a Porsche that was in a driveway. Thankfully, there was no one in the car at the time of the accident and the truck driver was uninjured as well. Police are still investigating.

Driver Ejected, Killed in Car Accident

Tuesday, authorities identified a man who was killed in a car accident on the 710 Freeway in Long Beach. Aaron, Gutierrez, 33, of Whittier, died at the scene of the car crash, said Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the coroner's office.

According to California Highway Patrol, Gutierrez was driving his truck north on 710 Freeway at 7:30pm Monday when his truck collided with a bus near Pacific Coast Highway. The crash sent his car skidding sideways into a medial on the right shoulder of the freeway, said CHP.

When Gutierrez' truck hit the median, it flipped over several times, ejecting him onto the PCH onramp to the freeway, according to Long Beach fire Capt. Mike Duree. A bus on the onramp then struck Gutierrez, who had not been wearing a seat belt, authorities said.
The bus driver pulled over about 200 yards away and was questioned by CHP officers. The driver of the vehicle that struck Gutierrez also stopped and was questioned.
Neither man was arrested, according to the CHP.
